Duties and Responsibilities

BACKGROUND The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organization for trade-related technical cooperation in developing countries. TMI is developing a new version of Trade Map, one of the world’s richest trade databases, empowering businesses and institutions to explore markets, uncover insights, and compete globally. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES The intern will work under the overall guidance of the senior market analyst and direct supervision of the statistician. In order to improve the data availability and quality of company-level data, the intern will focus on: • Collecting and processing information about countries reporting practices for trade in goods. • Collecting data about companies engaged in international trade from different identified sources. • Bringing different data sources together and build a consolidated dataset. • Working with raw datasets as well as existing databases and use computer coding skills together with analytical ones to process the data. • Contributing to the updating of Trade Map and other ITC online integrated solutions. Qualifications/special skills

Applicants to the ITC internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: 1. Enrolled in the final academic year of the first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); 2. Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or 3. Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in 1 and 2 above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Relevant field of studies e.g. business studies, international trade, development.

Languages

Languages and Skills: - Proficiency in English or French. - Knowledge of another UN language is a plus. - Strong coding skills to effectively process raw data in SAS, R or Python.

LEARNING ELEMENTS: 1. Get familiar with the data production in the field of international trade. 2. Develop proficiency in processing company-level data. 3. Learn how to reconcile data from different sources. Student work plans can be adjusted to achieve the academic requirements in their field of study or time can be made available to advance their academic obligations.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
